Finite Special Moufang Sets of Odd Characteristic
In this paper we classify finite special Moufang sets M(U, τ ) of odd characteristic. The characteristic 2 case was handled in another paper by De Medts and the author. We prove, using elementary means that U is elementary abelian. Then we show that M(U, τ ) is the unique Moufang set whose little projective group is PSL2(|U |). The emphasis of this paper is on obtaining elementary proofs. Secti...
متن کاملSpecial Involutions and Bulky Parabolic Subgroups in Finite Coxeter Groups
In [3] Felder and Veselov considered the standard and twisted actions of a finite Coxeter group W on the cohomology H(MW ) of the complement of the complexified hyperplane arrangement MW of W . The twisted action is obtained by combining the standard action with complex conjugation; we refer the reader to [3] for precise statements. In a case by case argument, Felder and Veselov obtain a formul...
متن کاملON THE CHARACTERISTIC DEGREE OF FINITE GROUPS
In this article we introduce and study the concept of characteristic degree of a subgroup in a finite group. We define the characteristic degree of a subgroup H in a finite group G as the ratio of the number of all pairs (h,α) ∈ H×Aut(G) such that h^α∈H, by the order of H × Aut(G), where Aut(G) is the automorphisms group of G. This quantity measures the probability that H can be characteristic ...
متن کاملCentralizers of Involutions in Finite Simple Groups
It has been known for a long time that the structure of a finite simple group is intimately connected with the structure of the centralizers of its involutions. An old result of Brauer and Fowler asserts, in fact, that there are at most a finite number of simple groups in which the centralizer of an involution has a given structure. A more specific, pioneering result of Brauer established that ...
متن کاملA semi-recursion for the number of involutions in special orthogonal groups over finite fields
Let I(n) be the number of involutions in a special orthogonal group SO(n,Fq) defined over a finite field with q elements, where q is the power of an odd prime. Then the numbers I(n) form a semi-recursion, in that for m > 1 we have I(2m+ 3) = (q + 1)I(2m+ 1) + q(q − 1)I(2m− 2). We give a purely combinatorial proof of this result, and we apply it to give a universal bound for the character degree...
